Castelbello - Ciardes / Kastelbell - Tschars

Castelbello ( Kastelbell in German) is located 600 m above sea level in the lower Val Venosta, together with its most important localities, Ciardes ( Tschars ) and Colsano ( Galsaun ) at the foot of the mountains.
The landscape of the valley in which it stands Castelbello is typically Mediterranean, with crops of vineyards, orchards and chestnut trees, fig trees and cypresses, in contrast to the alpine environment.

Castelbello - Ciardes / Kastelbell - Tschars

In the area there are five important castles, two of which are well preserved and open to the public. The Castelbello Castle is a small but mighty fortress featuring round towers, dating back to at least 1200, and built by the Lords of Montalban.
The various climatic zones present in the area of Castelbello- Ciardes favor the production of wholesome natural and high quality foods used in the gastronomy of the area typically inspired by the Tyrolean tradition, accompanied by local wines and spirits. >>> <<<

Around Castelbello and Ciardes are many works of hydraulic engineering to carry water for irrigation through long channels even ten kilometers long, the so-called "Waale", which are still in service today and constitute of pleasant paths for easy and relaxing excursions in the lower Val Venosta. Worthy of note is the Waal linking Ciardes to Juval Castle, residence of the mountaineer Reinhold Messner and home to one of the Messner Mountain Museums, also known as the "Path of the canal of Ciardes" (Latschander). <<<
